Description

Aloe Vera is a clump forming succulent with fleshy gray-green leaves arranged in a vase shaped rosette.  Small "teeth" form along the leaf edges and may terminate in sharp points.  The plant produces offset rosettes continually which may be removed.  In winter and spring, small yellow tubular flowers on branched stalks up to 3 ft.  Zebra Aloe (Aloe Maculata) has pale green leaves on short stems are colored with white striped spots giving it the nickname "Zebra Aloe" (sometimes called "soap aloe").  Orange flowers that come in several flushed in early spring and summer.

Aloe 'Hercules' is a fast-growing tree aloe that can grow up to 30 feet or more in height, with broad dark green leaves and a heavy trunk and branches.

Care and Handling
Most aloe are easy to grow requiring light or partial shade to full sun.  All Aloe should have good drainage in sandy or gravelly soils.  Although mostly drought tolerant, tips of the leaves may wither and curl during hot, dry periods.  This does not hurt the plants and supplemental watering will keep the leaves plump and juicy.  Most Aloe are frost tolerant to 28 degrees.
